The Nether is a hell-like realm found in Minecraft.
The Nether is a hellish wasteland that is found by heading through a Hellgate. It is believed that Israphel came from here, along with other monsters. Initially in the Shadow of Israphel Series, Simon and Lewis were unable to enter the Nether due to the 1.6 update. Later in the series, upon being able to enter the Nether, they found themselves in a large high-tech room full of TV's and were confused as to why the bank of television sets was there. They then found that the "real" nether was through a window that was on the wall, and also thought that perhaps the portal they went through was similar to a TARDIS, and sent them through time. Israphel's Cult has built many Hellgates leading to the Nether, with our unsuspecting heroes building a single Gate. The heroes are seeking out Hellgates and destroying them as well as hunting map fragments. It is believed that the Nether Portals are a source of the Sand that has started to appear.
The Nether was introduced to Minecraft in Alpha as a Halloween update. This marks one of the major updates to Minecraft, along with the Seecret Friday updates, Adventure update, Pretty Scary update and the upcoming Redstone update. It is composed of Netherrack, a weak, brittle, red rock that makes up almost the entire hellish landscape, Soul Sand that is a quicksand-like block that slows you down as you move across, and Glowstone, which is a sought after block, giving off an eternal light. Nether brick fortresses also spawn across the Nether. In the 1.5 update, a new ore called Quartz was added to the Nether.
